In 2012, as part of the Kansas City Chamber of Commerce’s Urban Neighborhood Initiative, MLM partnered with the Boston Heights and Mount Hope Neighborhood, United Way, Kansas City Parks and Recreation Department, SkillBuilders of America and the Kansas City Water Department to plant a 100 tree urban fruit orchard. The vision for the orchard was for children and families to be able to come and pick fresh fruit right from the trees, including apple, pear, plum, peach, apricot and cherry. Since that time, the harvest has been bountiful, and neighbors designate their own plots to tend throughout the year. Volunteers and Mount Hope/Boston Heights residents serve alongside one another to take care of the Orchard.
Wednesdays and Thursdays are our best days for scheduling groups in the orchard. If you would like to volunteer as an individual, family, small group, youth group…on up to a max of 80 people, we can typically accommodate!
In 2013, MLM added gardens at the orchard location and at MLM’s Central location at 31st and Holmes. MLM has worked with the Kansas City Master Gardeners and the Kansas City Community Gardens to provide healthy vegetables for the neighborhood residents as well as fresh vegetables to the low-income clients at MLM’s food pantry.
If you enjoy gardening, join the regular team of gardeners that tend to MLM’s community gardens! Volunteers are always welcome.
The orchard and community gardens continue to be a place of hope and encouragement for the neighborhood while providing healthy food choices for the community.
