Volunteers help approximately 1,000 disadvantaged families, or 3,000-4,000 individuals, to shop the MLM Christmas Store for new or used items. Each individual or family receives a blanket, food voucher, Bible, and gift for each family member. We need many “Christmas Store Elves” to make it possible. Elves walk through the store with guests and help them shop.

The 2016 Christmas Store took place Saturday, December 3 – Saturday, December 10 at Immanuel Lutheran (1700 Westport Road, Kansas City, MO 64111).

Thank you to all the amazing volunteers and donors who made the Christmas Store possible.

Please contact Brooke Hodnefield, Volunteer Development Coordinator at or 816.285.3154.

The Christmas Store has been in existence as long as MLM has…since 1971. It started with only three families and has grown to make Christmas possible for 1,000 needy Kansas City families, about 3,000 individuals annually. Working throughout the year, money is raised through special events to purchase gifts, corporate contributions are sought and donations are received. The store provides gifts, bibles, blankets and food and is one of the largest gift-giving program in the Greater Kansas City. Each family is pre-screened to meet low-income guidelines to ensure that they are not helped by any other Christmas store. Individuals and families who are served are at or below 150% of the federal poverty level. This is MLM’s largest volunteer event and there are many ways you can serve!

Each family must have their application taken to determine if they meet criteria for assistance. Utilizing online applications volunteers are needed to capture this required information by working directly with potential clients. Required  training is provided, and no prior experience is necessary.

Application taking for the 2016 Christmas Store is finished. Contact Brooke Hodnefield with any questions at 816.285.3154.

One hundred of the individuals/families that MLM serves through the Christmas Store are homebound, and volunteers deliver their gifts to their homes. MLM staff identify eligible recipients throughout the summer calls the list of referrals, organizes, and gives it to church volunteers in October. Volunteers from participating churches purchase gifts for each member of the client households from October-November. The gifts are organized by church members at a packing event on a Tuesday and then delivered on a Saturday in early December.

The 2016 Homebound Basket Delivery was held Saturday, December 3.  Thank you to the many volunteers who helped make this event a success!

We need many “elves” to help make Christmas merrier for hundreds of Kansas City families.
