Daniel “Joe” Bonacci might be called a one-man army. Daniel is the first of hopefully many new volunteers in MLM’s revitalized friendly visitor program for the older adult. On board for more than two months, Daniel spends 16-20 hours a week compiling lists of area senior citizens, the disabled or homebound. He then calls them regularly to provide an outside link and to check on their general wellbeing. “We’re hoping to see the program grow,” Daniel explained. “So far, I’m the total ballgame, but it’s a good idea and I think it will catch on with more volunteers.” A seasonal worker with the IRS, Daniel plans to remain available. “I’m finding that for a lot of people, the only link with the outside is a phone call,” he explained. “It’s a very valuable service.” Daniel finds the work fits well with his schedule, generally offering flexible hours and days of the week. “It’s really easy and the people appreciate it so much,” he noted. “They realize there is someone to contact. It’s a valuable program for the older adult, homebound or the handicapped. Someone out there does want to contact them every now and then.” |
