Volunteers Form Crucial Key to MLM Services

Susie Green
Volunteers are a key factor in the success of MLM’s services, but they also provide important links to the member congregations, to the community and even our organization’s history.

Metro Lutheran Ministry is fortunate to have many volunteers who help in many ways. These generous people assist with everything from carrying boxes for senior citizens, to answering phones. Here are three of their stories:

Elaine “Susie” Green is a long-time MLM volunteer, having served in MLM Christmas Stores in several capacities. After her first husband died in 1992, the Lee’s Summit resident increased her service, now spending almost every weekday at MLM assisting with administrative duties that help keep the non-profit organization operating.

A native of Independence, Susie said the work is important for her as well as MLM. “I just like the idea that I can help someone rather than sit at home,” she said. “I thank the Lord for that. It’s something a lot of people can do.”

Stan Bremer
Stan Bremer’s sense of humor becomes evident from the start, when he “admits” to being a Methodist who has worked with Metro Lutheran Ministry since 1990.

A former MLM Board member and “Friendly Visitor for the older adult,” he has helped build many ramps in area homes. Today he works in the MLM commodity warehouse, helping sort the hundreds of pounds of food and other products distributed weekly.

“It’s really enjoyable,” the Grandview resident noted. “You feel like you’re contributing and helping out.”

Jim Simpson works nearby, also helping sort commodities and move them from the warehouse to MLM’s food pantry. A Leawood resident, he noted his volunteer work began after he retired from a 42-year career with a national corporation.

Jim Simpson
“MLM has always been an organization I’m interested in,” he explained. “Our Associate Pastor at Atonement told me about the opportunity and I went for it. I’ve never regretted it for a minute.”

Simpson echoed other volunteer comments regarding how much he has learned volunteering at MLM. “You don’t realize the large amount of work that goes into keeping the organization functioning and healthy,” he said. “Funding is always a major concern, but there are many more activities than people probably realize.”
