Thrift Store Marks 2nd Anniversary of Success

Blessings Abound Thrift Store is pleased with our first 2 years of operation. Our presence in Overland Park has been met with great enthusiasm from the volunteers and the public of whom we service. We depend on volunteers to help sort and display the merchandise. Come and see the many changes have taken place since our opening. The traffic into the store has increased due to new neighbors in the area: True Value, Savers, Mar-Bec, and Prior Attire. Please make a note in church bulletins to have members and friends visit our store. We have a shortage of volunteers at the following times: Monday afternoon, Wednesday morning and afternoon, Thursday afternoon, and Saturday afternoon. Visit the store and sign up. We have had several groups (churches, businesses, schools) volunteering their time to help us.

Stop by and meet Kristi Dalberg. She is on assignment from Americorps VISTA and will assist in coordinating volunteer services and will also be an outreach for the store by visiting area churches, businesses, and schools. There are several social activities for her to represent the store such as job fairs and other community events.

As we have progressed through the past two years, several improvements have been made. We continue to grow and look for inputs from the volunteers to continue our successful operation.

We willfully support the ministries of Metro Lutheran Ministry and Lutheran Urban Mission Agency. Blessings Abound has been sharing revenue with each agency for the past twelve months.

Contact the store or visit the website to understand what donations are accepted.

Services and donation requirements:
• Call ahead or see a volunteer at the front desk first to inquire about donating. • All items are donated. We accept quality and clean second-hand merchandise. • We inspect donations. Donations in poor shape, damaged, or extremely dirty, may be rejected. • We have contracted a logistic service to pick up furniture and some other large items. A fee to offset the pick up costs will be requested. Contact the store for details and scheduling. • We cannot accept any merchandise deemed hazardous or those having safety issues and recalls. • To receive a receipt, provide a list of your donations and follow Internal Revenue Service Code (publication 526). • Monetary donations are accepted to either: Partners: People in Progress, Inc. or Blessings Abound • Blessings Abound is approved by Thrivent Financial for the “Giving Plus” program. Visit the store to obtain the application.

There will be a special book sale on November 5th, 6th, and 7th. We will once again host the sale with “GiveWhatYouGot” foster care support team. Refreshments will be sold.

At the end of 2009, all volunteer hours will be tallied. There will be 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place gift cards ($100, $75, & $50) for the top three churches with the most volunteer hours. The gift cards are then to be donated to needy families by the churches. So get on board in the last quarter to support this activity.

Store hours: Monday through Friday; 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, Saturday; 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, closed Sunday Holiday and special occasion hours will be posted at front door and on our website. We accept payment in cash or Master Card/Visa Card

Sincerely,
Rick Chapman, Store Director
