Metro Lutheran Ministry (MLM) provides critical help to the poorest of the poor in metropolitan Kansas City, providing food and shelter to those in need. In just the last year MLM has:

Given away more than 2 million pounds of food to people in need.
Expanded Saturday food giveaways from once a month to twice a month
Opened Grace Homes to give chronically mentally ill, chronically homeless persons a safe and nurturing long-term home.
Placed 224 homeless families into permanent housing
Helped 234 clients seek employment through the Chael/Dykman Education Center

The poor, the frail older adult, the homeless—these are populations that many would prefer to ignore. Yet a little help, a boost for self-sufficiency is often enough to make the difference.

Throughout its history, MLM has been one of Kansas City's pioneering social service agencies, organizing innovative and effective social service and emergency assistance programs to meet the needs of the poorest of the poor.

MLM serves people throughout Greater Kansas City
with locations in Jackson, Wyandotte and Clay counties

Anchored by dozens of congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, and the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, MLM also receives support from many congregations of other denominations. We receive funding from these congregations, as well as federal, state, and local government programs, individuals, foundations, and corporations.

A 501(c)(3) nonprofit social service agency, Metro Lutheran Ministry (MLM) helps disadvantaged people of all races, religions and nationalities in the urban areas of Jackson, Clay and Platte Counties in Missouri and Wyandotte and Johnson counties in Kansas.

MLM uses a holistic approach, which guides receptive clients toward greater independence and self-reliance. Our programs help family members and individuals find and keep work, help older residents remain independent in their homes—and much more.

MLM works hard to minimize expenses:
90% of designated gifts go directly to programs. Last year, MLM served tens of thousands of people throughout metropolitan Kansas City

“The Line”

Each morning when I approach the MLM door frame
“The Line” greets me with the rising sun
Ever changing but each day the same

“The Line” leaves out no one
From the disabled man, stepping ever so careful
To the young mother with an infant son

My first thought is of their struggle
I want to hug every person to me so badly
Then I realize I am not able

I can’t take the wheel-chair bound lady, and leave the homeless man, surely?
Or take the wide-eyed teen, and leave the crying two-year-old?
Or take the sad-looking daughter, and leave her mother hungry?

Prayer is the only way I am consoled
God’s heart is big enough for all
So I pray for all to turn to Him as their stronghold.

I pray for all of Jesus’ servants that hear His call
To minister to the poor and needy this day
And help the impoverished hold their heads high and stand tall.

I pray.
